How to Convert Units and Check the Result

Convert length, weight, temperature, volume, speed, data, time, and area units, and check the source unit and rounding before using a result.

Unit conversion changes how a quantity is expressed without changing the quantity itself. The first step is to identify the number and its source unit; the second is to select the target unit in the same measurement category.

Convert a measurement

  1. Open the Unit Converter and select a category such as length, weight, temperature, volume, speed, data, time, or area.
  2. Enter the value and choose its current unit.
  3. Select the unit you need. Review the full conversion table if you want equivalent values in several units.
  4. Check the result’s precision and round only as much as the task permits.

Temperature conversions need special treatment

Most unit conversions use a scale factor. Temperature conversion also includes an offset: for example, Celsius and Fahrenheit do not share a zero point. Confirm that you selected temperature rather than applying a length-style multiplier.

Keep the context with the number

A converted value without a unit label is easy to misread. Keep the source and target units beside the result, especially in spreadsheets, recipes, technical drawings, and reports. For regulated, scientific, or safety-critical work, verify the factor and rounding requirements against the applicable standard or original specification.

The online Unit Converter handles common categories for quick reference. It does not determine which unit system a particular project, contract, or instrument requires.
