Catching What Autocorrect Creates
The error types, ranked by embarrassment
Different misspellings have different causes — and different chances of slipping through:
| Error type | Example | Caught by spellcheck? |
|---|---|---|
| Plain typo | recieve → receive | Yes, reliably |
| Homophone | their / there / they're | No — all are valid words |
| Autocorrect substitution | definitely → defiantly | No — it's spelled correctly |
| Proper noun | Islamabad, Khyber, LinkedIn | Flagged wrongly; verify yourself |
| British vs American | colour / color, analyse / analyze | Depends on dictionary — be consistent |
Spellcheck and grammar check do different jobs
Spellcheck asks “is this a word?”; grammar check asks “is this the right word, used correctly?” “Defiantly going to the meeting” passes spellcheck and fails meaning — only the grammar checker catches it. For anything that matters — applications, proposals, published posts — run both: spelling first, then grammar, in that order.
Pick a side: British or American
Pakistani institutions inherited British spelling (colour, organisation, programme), while much of the web and most software defaults American. Either is correct; mixing them in one document is the error. Decide per document — British for local institutions and CSS/PMS exams, American for US clients — and stay consistent. Final pass: confirm length limits with the word counter and fix stray capitals with the case converter.
