Understanding Aspect Ratios
The Shape Math Behind Every Screen
Ratios you'll keep meeting
Aspect ratio is width-to-height shape, independent of size. A few ratios cover almost everything:
| Ratio | Where it rules | Example dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| 16:9 | Video, YouTube, presentations, monitors | 1920 × 1080 |
| 4:3 | Older displays, some tablets, document scans | 1024 × 768 |
| 1:1 | Profile photos, Instagram grid | 1080 × 1080 |
| 9:16 | Stories, Reels, TikTok, phone wallpapers | 1080 × 1920 |
| 3:2 | Photography, prints | 6000 × 4000 |
| 7:9 (35×45 mm) | Passport and ID photos | 413 × 531 |
The calculation everyone needs eventually
You know one dimension and the ratio; you need the other. A video frame 1280 wide at 16:9 → 1280 × 9 ÷ 16 = 720 tall. An image 531 tall at 7:9 → 531 × 7 ÷ 9 = 413 wide. The calculator does this both directions and simplifies odd dimensions back to a clean ratio — useful when a client sends a 1638 × 2048 file and you need to know it's just 4:5.
When shapes don't match: letterbox or crop
Fitting a 4:3 image into a 16:9 slot forces a choice — letterbox (bars fill the gap, whole image visible) or crop (slot filled, edges lost). Stretching is never the answer; distorted faces and logos are instantly visible. To crop to an exact ratio, the cropper has ratio presets; exact pixel output is the resizer's job, and on-screen measurement of any element is what the screen ruler is for.
