Cropping with Intent

Aspect ratios people actually crop to

Most crops are really about hitting a required shape. The ratios that come up constantly:

RatioShapeUsed for
1:1SquareProfile photos, Instagram grid
4:5Tall portraitInstagram feed (max screen space)
16:9WideYouTube thumbnails, presentation slides
35:45 (7:9)ID portraitPassport, visa, NTS/FPSC photos
3:2Classic photoPrints, photography portfolios
9:16VerticalStories, Reels, TikTok

The two-step rule: crop, then resize

Crop decides which pixels survive; resize decides how many. Doing them in that order — crop to the target ratio first, then resize to exact dimensions — avoids the stretched-face distortion that comes from forcing a 4:3 photo into a square. For ID photos this order is mandatory: crop to 35:45 with the head positioned per the portal's guide, then resize to the required pixels, then compress to the KB limit.

Quick composition wins

For portraits, leave breathing room above the head and crop at mid-torso rather than at joints. For products, center the item and keep generous margins — marketplaces overlay badges on corners. For landscapes, place the horizon on a third line, not the middle. Need the canvas ratio worked out from one known dimension? The aspect ratio calculator does the arithmetic.
