Your Real WPM, and What It's Worth
Benchmarks: where speeds actually fall
WPM numbers float around without context. Here's the honest scale:
| WPM | Level | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Under 30 | Hunt-and-peck | Typing is actively slowing your work |
| 30–45 | Average | Where most untrained typists sit |
| 50–65 | Office proficient | Comfortable for data entry and admin roles |
| 70–90 | Fast | Writing flows at thinking speed |
| 100+ | Exceptional | Competitive typist territory |
Accuracy is the speed hack nobody wants to hear
Every error costs more than the keystroke — you notice, backtrack, correct, and resume, easily losing several words' worth of time. A 95%-accuracy typist at 60 WPM outputs more clean text than a 90%-accuracy typist at 70. Train at a pace where you stay above 97% accuracy and speed follows on its own; chasing the WPM number first bakes in error habits that are hard to unlearn.
Why it matters here
Government and clerical job tests in Pakistan (and data-entry roles everywhere) set explicit WPM floors — often 30–40 WPM with accuracy requirements — so a measured score tells you exactly where you stand before test day. Practice in focused blocks: the pomodoro timer structures 25-minute sessions, and the stopwatch times custom drills.
