Common Questions

The Three Questions Every Percentage Problem Reduces To

The three forms, with formulas

Every percentage task is one of three questions. Identifying which one you're asking is most of the work:

QuestionFormulaExample
What is X% of Y?Y × X ÷ 10015% tip on Rs. 2,400 → Rs. 360
X is what % of Y?X ÷ Y × 100Scored 645 of 850 → 75.9%
% change from A to B?(B − A) ÷ A × 100Bill went 3,200 → 4,000 → +25%

The traps: points vs. percent, and stacked discounts

If a profit rate moves from 10% to 12%, it rose 2 percentage points but 20 percent — news headlines blur this constantly. And discounts don't add: 20% off then 10% off is 28% off, not 30%, because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price. Same logic in reverse: a 25% loss needs a 33% gain to break even. When money is involved, run the actual numbers instead of adding percentages in your head.

Where these calculations land in real life

Exam scores to percentages, salary raises, GST on invoices, profit margins on Daraz listings, year-over-year growth for a pitch deck. Percentages feeding bigger decisions have dedicated tools: loan costs in the EMI calculator, academic standing in the GPA calculator, and fraction-to-percent conversions in the fraction calculator.
