Lorem Ipsum for Wireframes: Choose the Right Placeholder Text
Use placeholder text deliberately in mockups and prototypes, choose a realistic length, and replace it before publishing or testing real content.
Lorem Ipsum is filler copy used to test how a layout behaves before final text is ready. It lets a designer see line lengths, paragraph rhythm, and how a page changes when a block contains more than a heading or one short sentence.
Generate placeholder copy for a layout
- Open the Lorem Ipsum Generator.
- Choose whether the mockup needs paragraphs, sentences, or words, then set an approximate amount.
- Generate the text and paste it into the component you are designing.
- Review the layout at desktop and mobile widths, including long headings and buttons.
Match the shape of real content
Use short placeholder text for a compact card, a few paragraphs for an article preview, and a longer sample when checking a page template. If the final content will include lists, captions, or multiple headings, add those elements to the mockup too. A block of Latin filler cannot test whether real copy is clear, accurate, or accessible.
Replace filler before release
Placeholder copy should not remain on a public page. Search the final site for “Lorem ipsum” before launch, replace every instance with approved text, and verify that the real content still fits. Do not use filler text as a substitute for writing a useful page.
